About the Organization

The National Employment Law Council (NELC) is a not for profit organization that was created in 1997 to enrich the careers and lives of attorneys of color who represent management in the field of labor and employment law. Over the last twenty years, NELC has fulfilled this mission by focusing on five key strategic priorities for its members:

Education – NELC provides continuing legal education programs to enhance the substantive knowledge of its members and facilitates the introduction of practitioners to each other.
Communication – NELC provides a communication medium for the exchange of ideas, career, and other networking opportunities.
Employers – NELC provides a mechanism for corporate and institutional employers to identify members to serve as their outside counsel.
Members - NELC provides opportunities for its members to develop and present their experience and knowledge through speaking and writing engagements.
Mentoring – NELC provides mentoring to emerging management-side labor and employment attorneys.
By focusing on these priorities over the last 20 years, NELC is now comprised of hundreds of leading labor and employment defense attorneys, including many from majority and minority-owned law firms and corporate law departments. Recognizing the need to facilitate the success of younger practitioners, in 2011, the NELC Academy was launched to cater to the development of promising attorneys of color with less than four years of labor and employment defense experience.

In addition to smaller regional conferences, the NELC Annual Conference is the organization’s signature event and features presentations on cutting edge labor and employment topics by experts in the field.

Job Summary

The NELC’s growth and vision require an Executive Director who will assist the Board of Directors (“Board” with driving their strategic direction for the organization. The Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing the organization, including creating a structure than enables the efficient design, development and execution of all programming and partnerships for the NELC as well as the organization’s budget and branding. The Executive Director will oversee the day-to-day operations and member relations tasks for the organization. The Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing the meetings of the Board, the planning of national and regional conferences, managing and organizing subcommittees as required, negotiating contracts, and developing and executing a social media plan and other general duties. The Executive Director will also assist the Board’s fundraising initiatives (including innovative partnership opportunities with law firms, corporate legal departments, and third-party vendors or sources) for the organization. The Executive Director must also cultivate relationships amongst NELC’s current members and create initiatives to further increase NELC’s membership reach.

NELC’s ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership on behalf of, and possesses a history of, or who desires to leverage their experience to increase, engagement and support for minority attorneys (or other professionals). He or she will have business development experience, whether in a professional or volunteer capacity, and both demonstrate a willingness to manage projects to assist the Board to grow its membership, increase its sponsorship, and develop its brand in line with its five strategic priorities.

The NELC is seeking a full-time employee with a flexible schedule and willingness to travel. This position can be based anywhere in the United States and will report into the Board’s Executive Committee.
